After Vasco de Gama discovered the Seychelles, they were known as the "Seven Sisters" archipelago on Portuguese maps. There was even a constellation above, called the Seven Sisters, that sailors used for navigation while at sea. Each of these seven sisters was named after one of the daughters of Atlas and Pleione, and, according to the legend, Maia was the most beautiful of all.
